WHAT IS TMJ DYSFUNCTION?
According to the World Health Organisation a quarter of the population suffers from TMJ Dysfunction.
TMJ stands for Temporal Mandibular Joint & refers to the two hinge joints located at either side of the face that connect the jaw to the skull. These joints are the hardest working joints in the body & work in symmetry to allow for opening & closing of the mouth as well as forward, backward & sideway movements of the lower jaw.
When these joints are out of place or not working in symmetry, they can cause many problems, such as:

Clicking or popping of the jaw joints

Pain in or around the jaw joints

Locking or limited opening of your mouth

Muscle pain/ spasm in the muscles that surround & support the jaw
Symptoms of TMJ Dysfunction can range from mild to severe, the pain can be temporary, or it can last for many years. There may be only one symptom present or there could be a combination of the symptoms listed below:

Clicking sensations when opening & closing the mouth

Clenching or grinding of the teeth

Headaches

Dizziness or nausaa

Ear-Related Symptoms: ear aches, hearing loss or ringing in the ears (Tinnitus)

Pain behind the eyes

Feeling 'tired' in the facial area or having a dull aching sensation in the face

Neck, shoulder, or back pain.
